If you’re interested in buying a smokeless ashtray, you’ve taken a positive, thoughtful and responsible step by accepting that others around you including your own family or friends, might not want to be exposed to secondhand smoke. But you should tread carefully because a lot of people had very disappointing experiences and some had very good experiences. Smokeless ashtrays are trying to make a modern comeback with new technology, after earning a reputation decades ago as lousy gimmicks. But contrary to what one advertiser below shockingly implied, these things still can’t turn your smoking zone into a smoke free zone.
There are two types that made it to the top five. The older least popular type, simply traps smoke inside a small ash bin after you dispose of the butt. These boring old first generation smokeless ashtrays are making a comeback supported by motorists, who find it convenient to mount the cup shaped ashtray in car cup holders. These ashtrays are also maintenance free. The second generation has high maintenance with fans that wear down, consumable air filters and short lasting batteries. But the advantage is they not only suck up smoke from butts, but also from idle lit smokes.
Holmes Smoke Grabber Ashtray and Odor Eliminator HAP75-UC2
This smoke sucker has carbon filters with multiple layers to keep fresh cigar or cigarette smoke away from the nonsmokers around you. Where you exhale your second hand smoke might make these efforts redundant, unless you’re prepared to run out the room for that, blow it out a window or slowly exhale it into the ashtray vacuum. But if you’re going to act like that you might quickly find yourself alone in the room. A socially disastrous conclusion to what started out as a thoughtful intent to impress your guests. At least you won’t need to buy more air filters.
A lot of buyers were disappointed with the weak fan’s terrible shortfall, trying to “grab” smoke into the carbon filters. It’s noisy and drains the two big D sized batteries faster than a lot of consumers would expect. When the lid is opened, the motor runs and goes off when the lid is closed. Opening the lid too far, raises the tray so you can easily take it out, and it washes well too. Some people had problems with the fan and a lot of people were disappointed. Some were well pleased with it, these contradictions reveal highly polarized testimonies.
Gratefulbuys Smokeless Ashtray
Unlike the two big batteries of the number one item reviewed here, this one uses two smaller C size batteries. If you rarely smoke, the double filter might only need replacing after 40 days, but if you smoke a packet daily, you might need to change the filters weekly. It runs quietly, unlike the number one ashtray in this review. It’s so quiet you might not notice it’s running, until maybe two hours later when you try to smoke and find dead batteries. If you safely block two holes for inserting smokes, the remaining two will have better smoke suction.
It’s made of fireproof materials, and Japanese designed to accommodate cigars and cigarettes. Unlike the number one ashtray, this one’s more difficult to remove ash buildup on the tray. Only take the cover off for cleaning, else it can’t suck up smoke. A number of people had breakdowns after weeks of use. It can become noisier over time, it’s not supposed to be noisy and some people testified that it’s very quiet. But a lot complained about noise. The complaints and satisfaction seem quite reminiscent to those for the number one ashtray, in summary it seems quality control was lacking.
Roadpro X-Large Self-Extinguishing Ashtray RP-452L
As the name suggests, this one is designed for those on the road, more specifically for vehicles with cup holders. It doesn’t mean you can’t use it in your guestroom, but it might look a bit thrifty having what appears to be a cup being used as a compromise ashtray, provided nobody is clumsy enough to use it for drinking without first checking what’s in the deep dark unknown. But the cup form makes it much easier to throw out the garbage. A lot of people remarked with surprise over how big the cup is, they were expecting something smaller.
A lot of folk liked these smokeless ashtrays so much that multiple orders were made for their other cars and as gifts. A few people didn’t receive a lid with their orders. Compared with the technologically complex ashtrays ranking above this one with extra costs for batteries and air filters, this simple smokeless ashtray, had a significantly better reception, with few complaints besides mostly missing lids. It just shows that a good smokeless ashtray doesn’t need a fan or an air filter to do the job. Indeed the early smokeless ashtrays of old times, didn’t have fans and air filters.
Zone Tech Car Smokeless Ash Tray
Another cup styled smokeless ashtray for cars, but without the good reception. Zone Tech seem to exaggerate: “allows you to have that smoke while still creating a “smoke free” zone.” An unusual definition for a smoke free zone. Maybe too much stereotypical hype associated with smokeless ashtrays. Should’ve mentioned you need to exhale the smoke out of the window, and hope passengers behind you didn’t leave their windows open. Anyway it has pretty blue LEDs to blend in with the night scene, while helping to prevent you from lighting up your car after dropping a smoke in the wrong place.
Unlike the Roadpro ashtray, which doesn’t require you to pulverize a smoke before dropping it in the cup, with this one you’re expected to give it a good bashing up the top of the cup before dropping it in, but you should stop the car and pullover before doing this. Be warned that throwing smokes out with the result of causing a fire, is a serious criminal offense. The smoke holding slots are level with the ground, unlike some others that can cause smokes to fall down. The lighting is very useful, switches on when the lid is opened properly.
VIMVIP Portable Stainless Car Smokeless Ashtray
Another smokeless cup holder ashtray for cars. This one is mostly plastic with a metal lid. It also has a blue LED for night time fun without making a mess. The LED isn’t one of those eye irritating lights that can cause a dangerous nuisance while driving. A few people commented about minor LED problems like the switch or flickering. It’s sized to fit most car cup holders, with a diameter of around 6 centermeters. It looks like one of those mini trash cans, complete with flip lid. The ashtray is easy to clean, just empty, then wash or wipe.
There’s a hole at the top to snuff out burning smokes. You just put your smoke in the hole holder then flip the lid closed, it kills the fire so you can light it up later to continue where you left off. For faster results you can just use the other little holder to manually knock out the flame. It’s made with fireproof resources, though it’s all plastic except the lid. It’s sturdy yet lightweight, doesn’t fall over easily with burning ashes. It holds a lot of ash. The flip lid closes firmly to keep the ashes out of trouble.
The top smokeless ashtrays were fan running, battery powered air filters. But the last three in the top five were a completely different type of smokeless ashtray, reminiscent of the old early smokeless ashtrays. They had no battery powered fan to try to extract smoke into the consumable air filters. Rather they trapped smoke inside a cup shaped pit, that’s designed to fit in car cup holders, but also intended for home and office use. One of the car cup holder smokeless ashtrays was so well designed, it would self extinguish smokes for you, just drop it in the pit.
Realistically speaking, a smokeless fan run ashtray with air filters won’t protect other people from your smoke. If you’ve seen these ashtrays in action, it becomes obvious that they only mitigate smoke at best. The worst part is, that the worst type of smoke in the largest quantity is untouched by these ashtrays. This is the secondhand smoke exhaled in large amounts by smokers. The small amount of fresh unused smoke that emits from idle smokes sitting in an ashtray, is actually less harmful than secondhand smoke. But this fresh small smoke, and smoke from butts, is all it filters.
Regarding cup type smokeless ashtrays that trap smoke from the butts, they don’t stop smoke until the smoking source has been thrown in their little cup bin. So while the smokes are sitting around idle and lit, they’re releasing smoke around you. This is the advantage of the higher ranking fan run, air filtered ashtrays. Although this new generation of smokeless ashtrays have added a new stage that removes smoke from idle cigarettes, we need a third generation that sucks air from a room and filters out the smoke, with a suction cavity, while smokers exhale towards the vacuum entry.
